Silver Surgery: The rise of cosmetic surgery in the over-50s
Botox: More than just an anti-wrinkle product
Many people are born with birthmarks and these birthmarks can vary in size, colour and location. Birthmarks are generally described as a mark on the skin that is unique to the individual that does not quickly disappear.
Most birthmarks are fairly small and are hidden by clothing however some birthmarks are on more prominent areas of the body. Some birthmarks can also pose health risks therefore some people may seek out the advice of a cosmetic surgeon with a view to getting the birthmark removed.
There are three major types of birthmark:
- Vascular Birthmarks: Vascular birthmarks are one of the most common types of birthmarks and are often known as ‘port-wine stains’. They can be found on all areas of the body and typically will not fade or disappear over time.
- Macular Birthmarks: Macular birthmarks are sometimes known as salmon patches and are flat, normally light pink patches of skin. They are most commonly found on the neck and eyelids. Those on the eyelids tend to fade over time, however the marks on the neck tend not to.
- Pigmentation Birthmarks: Pigmentation birthmarks are where the skin has too much colour or pigment. Pigmentation birthmarks include some moles, or brown or cream coloured patches of skin. These marks normally fade over time.
When to have your birthmark removed
The key to successful birthmark removal treatment is to treat the birthmark as early as possible in infants, the colouring is often lighter therefore fewer treatments are needed to remove the birthmark. However, older children and adults can successfully have their birthmarks removed. At a young age, normally 4-6 treatments will be needed over a period of several months.
Birthmark Removal Treatment
Birthmark removal is normally done on an outpatient basis and normally does not involve an overnight stay in hospital. Lasers are usually used to remove birthmarks. A pulsed dye laser (which produces a yellow light) will be aimed at the patch of skin. The light passes harmlessly through the translucent layers of the skin and heats the underlying blood vessels that are causing the lesion.
The laser emits the light in pulses meaning that the heat in the blood is diffused without damaging the surrounding tissues. The heated blood will then congeal and the vessels will atrophy leaving a lightened colouring. The time taken for each session will depend on the size and extent of the birthmark and a session can be several minutes or several hours long.
In a single session, it is possible to see dramatic results, although several treatments will probably be needed. Overall, laser treatment can dramatically fade or remove birthmark stains with virtually no scarring.
Risks & Complications
As with any form of cosmetic surgery, there is an element of risk. As the procedure is non-invasive, the risks are smaller than with other forms of cosmetic surgery. The patient may feel a slight burning sensation when the laser hits the skin and there may be some pain in the skin. The major risks associated with birthmark removal surgery are those of scarring and infection.
The skin may also become patchy, with areas of darkened or lightened skin surrounding by spots of lighter pigmentation. However, these risks are very small and not particularly common.

People always ask me, is that a hickey? But they dont realize how bad that hurts me. It makes me feel like everyones starting at me and often times i become uncomfortable in school and I need maybe a home remedy or some advice to help take it away. I just wanna feel beautiful for once and its such a rough time being a sophmore and going through this. Can somebody please help me. :'(
I have a brown birthmark size of a medium size leaf on my right leg real close to my butt and can be seen if I am wearing a bathing suit. For years I was teased asked if that was a shit stain. Sad

When i was younger everyone would make fun of me, so i just wear pants all the time, and boys swim shorts in the summer. But as i get older, i find it more annnoying, and embarrasing, and i just want it gone! I dont know how to tell my mom this, and i dont know how much it cost. Do you know how i should tell my mom, and how much it cost for laser or anything?

Hey I too have a birthmark on my neck. But dispite this I try to live it out we do only have 1chance to live life I came to australia 4rm new Zealand coz they said I wouldn’t live to da age of 5 I’ve had a few surgeries in Australia but still it don’t get rid of the obveous thing that hold me down yet still making me the centre of attention in a public place. Painful it is most of the time I try too smile it out but if any one out there knows of a great doctor it would mean a great deal too me. My 21st next year And. I ain’t gettin any younger nor do I wanna see my adult years unhappy.
Oh gosh, I have the same problem. I’m thinking of getting mine removed. I’ve just come out of a long term relationship and I’m terrified about it! Sounds like nothing to people but it really does wreck your self confidence in some situations!
I’m Sarah and I just turned 14 last month. I have a large, dark brown birthmark on my inner thigh. I hate it and I avoid wearing anything that will show it, this may sounds pathetic in my opinion though.
I do occasionally get picked on at school about it because no one else in my year has one that is that noticeable. I find it hard to talk to my parents about this kind of thing because they don’t see anything wrong with it, but I feel very insecure with it. If you have any advice please let me know =D
Thank you
I’m also 14 and have a light brown birth mark on the center of my right thigh. It’s not pathetic to not wear anything that will show it. Whenever I go out swimming I always cover it with my hand until i get into the water. I can’t talk to my parents about it even though they have seen it. I was looking up treatment and found skin camouflage. If you can stretch to £30 you can order it of the website. It comes with a set of very strong make up and applicators. It’s water proof as well so you can swim without being concious of it. Here’s the website http://www.camouflageskin.com/- hope it helps.
Ellie 🙂
This is embarrassing and I’m really ashamed but I have a birth mark on my right breast and it’s effecting my emotions, please, could I get it removed or not?

I have a portwine birthmark on the left of my face, when i was younger i had extenstensive laser treatment (like 10 times). Luckily iy has faded and I can now cover it with makeup, but hardly any of my friends know and ITs embarrasing at sleepovers and school trips whereyou feel embarrased to take your makeup off and have to hide in the toilet till you have reapllied. You mgiht be reading this thinking well she is lucky least she can cover it etc but I constantly think about people still being able to see it, and people seeing me without makeup! IT has also made my face ‘wonky’ so when im older i plan to get a nose job to make this less noticable. Over the years my birthmark has made me a stronger person, but it is not good to be this defensive. I know surgery is not an option for everyon, but i am truely greatful for having the opportunity, and I value everyone who can carry on day to day and being strong 🙂 xx
also to all those who are goign to pay for makeup, I know you can get very good quality camoflague doctors on the nhs persciption. :)! go to you gp and ask about veil cover creme, its really good.
and mac also make one which i use currently, (but switch between the other one too) its £20 called full coverage foundation, and you can go your local mac store and get a make up artist to apply, dont be embarrased about this, it seems silly but it really does work and even if it doesnt cover 100% it can cover a bit and give just that boost of confidence

I have a sphere shaped coffee birthmark around 3 cm width and 1 cm height on my stomach next to my belly button. I hate it and want to get it removed as soon as possible. It makes me so self concious and when people ask me weather to come swimming with them I always have to make up an excuse for not going.
How do you first discuss it to your doctor
How long will it take to get it removed ( not during surgery) — Like waiting list
Does it hurt?

Hey, I have a port wine stain birthmark on the back of my left leg. i’m so self concious of it, and during the summer i never wear shorts skirts or dresses because of it. i just want it to be removed and gone forever, so i can live my life without feeling so alone because i’m the only person i know that has a birthmark like mine. :'(
Hi, my name is Becky and I am 13. I have a port wine stain birthmark almost exactly between my two eyes, although it has considerably faded as I have got older I desperately want it removed. It is only recently (within the past year) that I have felt conscious of it and felt it is holding me back. My family are reluctant to let me pursue surgery, even though I have the money in a savings account, in case I regret it. Can anyone offer me advice as I feel like a freak…….no offfence to others with birthmarks! Thanks in advance.
hi, my name is chris. Im 17. im african american and i have a bmark on the right side of my face. its light brown. i want mine removed as well. in middle school i go teased a lot. I dont get teased as often in high school. Especially when your a senior. A lot of ppl thinks its cool. I have A LOT of friends and they say nothing about it. Some ppl ask me about it and i tell them what it is. Some girls think im attractive and some dont, but thats life right. Anyway, i would like to get mine removed but to some of u with bmarks not on ur face i dont think its a really big deal. you may have it on ur leg or arm but imagine having it on your face. Once you compare yours to mine its not that bad.
Hi everyone. I have read all your stories and to be honest, I too can relate to the humiliation and the low self-esteem one simple
birthmark can cause. I’m here to say that on Wednesday June 17,2009 I will be getting laser surgery to remove my birthmark. I will be happy to post how it went and if the procedure is well worth it.
– Myra
@Myra
I’m sure we’d all love to hear how your birthmark removal surgery goes. Good luck with it – hope it goes well!
Are macular birthmarks easy to remove?
When I apply pressure it dissapears for a few moments
reading all these stories is so wierd, because i thought i had a problem with the way i felt,
i honestly feel i cannot cope with having to wear all this makeup, i just want to be able to have them days where i can go out looking a mess, but i cant. im always worried my makeup will come off, i cant do normal things like go swimming.
my birthmark is located above my lip on the right hand side and is a dark red.

Hello All,
I found this site whilst once again searching for treatment for my vast birthmarks. I have port wine marks across my back, down my legs, my right arm and even my right breast. I am 36 and have been looking all of my adult life for treatment.
I have had laser surgery it faded them slightly, took years and was painful at times. I don’t want to put anyone off looking for treatment at all but i do wont to say something about letting these marks hold you back.
I am a bit older than most of the posts but i do remember how it felt as a child and young adult living with the misery of birthmarks. However it never stopped me doing anything i wanted to do, i studied, i have a great job, i’m married to an airline pilot and we have a 2 year old daughter.
Life will always present problems along the way, your family and friends will always love and support you. Those that taunt, call names etc ( and we have all had this) are ignorant and often lack self esteem themselves.
By all means look for treatment, which gets better all the time but don’t stop living and achieving your goals just because you feel as though you don’t look the same as everyone else. We are unique, each of us.
Good luck everyone.
sarah
Hi, i have a birthmark stain on the right side of my face which is the size of 2 pound coin. I very much hate the sight of it when i look in the mirror and i think how can i get it removed. But there is no chance of that happening in the UK unless someone knows a particular surgeon. I try to hide this by wearing collar shirts and when people talk to me i look away. Its really affecting me when im going for interviews or even talking to people. This is one thing in my life that i really want and if any of guys can help me, i would really, really appreciate it. I wouldn’t mind going abroad either so we should go as a group?
i am 20 yrs old and i know exactly how you feel. i have the whole back side of my left like with a port wine stain. It is extremely stressful always knowing it’s there and comparing yourself to other girls. But I know this isn’t the advice you want but you need to be confident. I where bathing suits and shorts and I just act like I don’t care. I know that even that is extremely hard, but being ok with it helps your friends and people you meet be ok with it to. So do your thing!!!! oh and if you ever find a permanent cure let me know too 🙂
how did it go myra?
hello!I ve got similar problem.have you been to USA did you rezolve your problem?please let me know…thank you1
All,
I have a large PWS covering my scalp, temples, left side of my neck, left pectorial, and all down my left arm…..Pretty extensive I’m sure you’ll agree.
Anyway, I have been receiving treatment at Nottingham Queens Medical Centre and it has dramatically toned the dark purple colour.
I would like to add that prior to visiting Nottingham Queens Medical Centre I went to Bedford Hospital for treatment. All in all I have bee receiving treatment for 10 years. Treatments have been 3-4 months apart, and they have been painful but wholly worth it.
I am lucky to be receiving my treatment on the NHS. I advise everyone out there to speak to their GP and ask to be in touch with their local SKIN Clinic.
I will help anyone who asks me any questions.
Good luck to you all.
P.S Anyone who takes that extra second when they look at you in the street just think; what a wanker.

I HATE IT! i have never been able to wear bathing suits or short sleeves. and i hated shopping for my grad dress because they are ALL SLEEVLESS! so on my grad day when im supposed to feel beautiful i felt ugly and selfconcious. and this summer i will have to be in a wedding and all those ugly feelings are going to start back up.and being 23 and all my freinds wear tanks and sleevless shirts in the summer its so depressing cause i cant wear stuff like that without a bunch of stares and questions. so please dont bitch about your little stains.

hi, i have a birthmark on my face and for many years have been receiving treatment. tbh though, it doesnt bother me, the majority of people at my school have come to accept it.
but for those who are struggling to cope, i have been receiving treatment at St Johns Hospital in Livingston, Scotland. There is a doctor who specializes in plastic surgery & birthmark removal.
hope this helps(:

ISABELLE!I am 16 and have a PWS on my right cheek down to my chin and a little spotting on mu neck. I also have had about 10 treatments and know how you feel. I gone through so much grief and i use makeup at all. At sleepovers and trips i tell my friends in advance i have a PWS and they are totally ok with it. There are so mean people out there that will put you down but don’t worry be strong. I play volleyball and constantly check on my makeup cause i feel like people can see through me and it makes me self conscience. I am planning to get more laser to lighten it and for once have a normal face! i am tired of makeup and hiding under this mask!!! I wish you luck with yours.
Hi, I’m 21 and I have a dark red birthmark under my right eye.. It’s a pain cos I try to cover it with make-up but it is still noticeable, so I get uncomfortable when people look me in the eye cos I feel like they are staring at it. I had loads of laser treatments when I was younger but nothing worked. A year and a half ago, after having 2 guys comment on how awful it was that I had been punched in the face, I went to SKIN and the guy told me that seeing as the treatments haven’t worked before there is a chance it’s a birthmark that can’t be removed. Tried one treatment and no difference.. I don’t know what to do now, don’t want to give up but don’t want to waste my money either.
search for Belo Medical Group
they helped alot of filipino’s with different problem with their skin especially the celebreties in the Philippines..
Dr. Vicky Belo is well known for her contribution to Showbiz she helped lots of Celebreties and other people who wanted to be beautiful =)
Ive got a brown birthmark myself and mines on my bum and i really hate it x
hey im shaun and i have a birthmark on my forearm. its about as big as the bottom of a pop can and its brown and grows hair. i always wear long sleeved shirts and its almost summer and i hate felling different from everyone else.
I have a brown birthmark on my upper arm, and I will never wear vests, but only a t-shirt or something that will cover it up, even then I’m paranoid that the sleeve will move up. I had enough of feeling so insecure about it, so this morning I had a test patch done at a sk:n clinic. At the moment it looks terrible and is stinging a lot too, but hoping it will look better soon (fingers crossed) 🙁
Hello, My name is Chris. For almost 20 years now I have lived with a birthmark running from the top of my head down the left side of my face (covering about 1/3 of my face). Was not teased about it or really even asked about it until high school but always sat shy and afraid to put myself out there in fear that people would look at me funny and make fun of me. I was teased quite a bit my freshman and sophomore year but still somewhat had friends. So I decided to lay low my junior year and everyday I prayed that God would remove this burden or atleast that no one would make fun of me. Not one person said anything to me my junior year about it (atleast not in teasing terms, just curiosity).
But it wasnt till my senior year that I found out that my birthmark wasnt really holding me back. Some people said it was cool and others said they forget its there or they barely notice it. Its kinda dark so there’s no way someone doesn’t notice it. People still hung out with me, ive had my share of attractive girls and am currently dating a Fijian model.
Even though I would love to have this thing removed and I welcome all advice and treatments, I just hope that those of you who shared the same fate as I did realize that its not our birthmarks holding us back necessarily. We are just afraid to put ourselves out there in fear of being teased. In some aspect I’m glad I have it because I would hate to know what kind of a cocky a**hole I might have turned out to be. I could be one of those kids that tease us. And if you look at it in a positive light, you will see some people have it alot worse than we do.
We have every right to be self conscious and be afraid to do things in fear of what people might think of our physical selves, but we can be more than that. I’ve pierced my ears, and started wearing glasses and I work out so that even though I may carry this mark, it will not decide who I am or what I’m suppose to look like. We make these decisions, it has no control over us and we need to stop letting other people take control also.
I have the same problem, a birth mark on my left leg just below my knee, about 8cm long. i hate it i will never go swimming or wear a skirt without thick black tights. i feel so ashamed and embarrased by it and i want it removed so bad!
Im 16 and i really have a very small birthmark. It’s located right exactly between my eyes. It’s dark-ish but not really dark. Maybe brown. It’s .2 cm. And i always cover it with bangs so it wont be seen. I always get conscious when people talk to me and stare at me because it’s obviously seen especially when it’s located inbetween ny eyes. What should i do?:( and how much is the laser surgery for this small?? ThankYou!
I’m 17, i have a pigmentation birthmark on my hip, i have an awesome body but i cant show it on holidays and in swimming baths etc due to the embarassment of the blemish. My mates call me poo stain and shit spot. My plan is to get a tattoo when i turn 18 this october however i do not want a tattoo there, i want it removing! Anyone know the costs of laser surgery for it as my bp has said i cant have it free and jesus will of been reborn by the time i get on the nhs, is there other ways of getting rid. STUPID SWEATY SHIT SPOT RUINING MY LIFE, I COULD BE ABALUTLEY NAILING SOME CHICK RIGHT NOW INSTEAD OF SEEKING ADVICE ON A STUPID SHIT SPOT WEBSITE
I’m 16 and have a huge port wine stain birthmark running from the middle of my right cheek, to the back of my neck, to my chin and to my chest, it’s quite dark and very noticable without make up. Because of the birthmark I have more blood cells in my right cheek making it slightly larger than my left cheek, i’ve become very self concious recently and feel like I have to wear make up everytime I leave the house, I have great skin and just wish I didn’t have to wear make up. I had laser treatment on my face for the first 18 months of my life then started again from the age of 14-16, I’ve just stopped it because I couldn’t be bothered with the little effects it was having. I thank god Im a girl because I can use make up to make it look less noticable and I thank god that I’ve been blessed with so many friends but it really annoys me when people come on here to complain about a little birthmark which is like a spot on their hip, count yourself lucky and that you don’t have a huge pink/purple one covering half your face.
Hi, my name is monica and I’m 19. My major concern is that I’m not even sure that my birth mark can be removed. I have a circular strawberry birthmark on my left shoulder. It’s very thin and you can see all the veins.
Does this sort of birthmark make removal more difficult? And is there another procedure available?
hey guys…i read all ur comments. I know whats is like to be stuck in a situation or having something you dont know if its curable or not!
hi my name is avery, i think i would have a port wine stain birthmark, it is on my leg, and has a big patch on my foot and all up to my knee are smaller patches, im 12 years old, almst a teenager and people keep asking me what it is and i say its a birthmark, some people say ew, some people dont care about it and they still hangout with me. but iv’e bin praying for the PWS birthmark to go away, please help me.

im hopeless…i need help!
Hey I’m Olivia and I have a huge birthmark on the left side of my face.I’m only twelve and have been taking treatment for it since I was young. I sadly gave up by the age of 8 because I was simply too old for a sleeping treatment and it really stings when I do it awake.I’ve been ashamed of it my whole life and felt like I couldn’t reach for my dreams with this “stain” on my face. I’ve always felt so insecure that almost everyday I imagine how better my life would be not having it. Sometimes I consider it lucky as I get to recognized the people who are my true friends and like me for who I am but for most of the time I feel extremely depress. On school field trip and I stay away from activity that involves showing my birthmark and I felt sad after. I really want to swim and have fun without worrying but I’ve come to learn that overtime it’s near to impossible. I’m now much more grown-up and have considered taking the treatment again. As I don’t want to have to continue feeling said I decided to stand the pain and hope it’s worth it. [I have a light pink birthmark that fades after a few years of hiding from the sun but still very visible.]
P.S: I took the treatment a few days ago and the best way is to listen to music as it distracts you. I feel much more better now that I can stand the pain and will continue to until it gets much lighter. Even though I’ve now learn day by day to love it I still want it to get much lighter and blend in with my skin color….[back to the point] After the treatment there are spots that goes purple-ish but that’s ok as my dad told me over a few days like 7 it will get lighter and you will see evidence that it works. Getting purple spot means it’s a good thing and that it’s fading away. Now coming to an end of this comment ,I’ve always liked to share this with someone who’s understand my feelings and would advise anyone out there to feel the same way I do because it actually works. 1/6 of my birthmark was gone and the rest was slight lighter. BY THE WAYYY!! my treatment for my case only lasted for five minutes and look at how much it has done :))
i have a birthmark on my face( one side )…im not sure that its a birthmark….i had lots of treatment like creams and even laser but nothing worked. Its like freckles but on one side that starts from mouth till my eye…i can hide it with foundation but the point is i wanna get rid of it for good…plz if there is anyone there who can help me…dont hesitate!now im thinking of a surgery but i dont know if it will work
Hey Olivia, I’m an old lady compared to you (37!!) but I was a little girl once, with a birthmark on my face who was teased and felt ashamed, and not as beautiful as my friends. I then grew into a beautiful young woman, even though I didn’t see that, I only saw the birthmark.
Anyone that says unkind things to you have ugly hearts and people like that have a way of getting their come-upance in the end. What goes around, comes around.
My gorgeous 5 year old daughter has strawberry marks down the back of her legs. I’ve told her it’s where the angels kissed her when she was born. She’s very proud at the moment as the angels didn’t kiss her sister! When she was born my mother-in-law said “oh well she can always wear make-up” and I said “you know what? how about we tell her she’s beautiful and it doesn’t matter”.
Don’t let anything stop you from “reaching out from your dreams”. I bet you’re gorgeous too.

hi im alex i am 15 and i have a vascular birth mark on my ear i hope it can be removed give me luck people ='[
i need help from u guys! coz im going through the same problems! i have a coffee-cream birthmark on my face…plz help me by telling me how to remove it plzzzz
hi!
i’m 30 and have a pink/red port wine stain under my right eye near my nose.it’s about the size of a 5 pence piece but shaped like a tear drop!
anyway, of course when you’re younger it’s all you see and all you want is it removing! as i got older, doesn’t bother me. until recently!
it’s changing! a little vessel has appeared – it’s raised and quite sore. only a small vessel, but i feel it could “expand”. anyway, thought i’d better pop to doctor’s to check it out!
oh yeah, read someone’s comment about people thinking she had a black eye – that’s one i’ve had loads of times! and children saying – “what’s that on your face….?!”
I have exactly the same thing in the same place, I’m thinking about getting it removed because I feel so concious about it when I’m on holidays!
hi, i’m a 38 year old male. my port wine stain starts on the left side of my neck, runs across my chest and down the front of my left upper arm, it’s massive. i’ve never given much thought to what people think about it, but find peoples continual stares quite invasive (the neck part pokes above certain clothing in 2 or 3 places and of course looks like love-bites, the arm part can easily be seen when i wear a tight fitting t-shirt).
i’ve recently considered speaking to my gp, it doesn’t hold me back in life, i’ve never shy’d away from public swimming pools and i’ve always had an answer for “sleep with the windows open last night did you ?” or “cor, your bird must’ve been hungry last night”.
i find people on this site who have a “penny sized mark on my leg which i find embarrassing” frustrating, it’s nothing, get a life and spare a thought for people who are affected by real issues.
Hi
Everyone I was born with a birthmark positioned between my eyes. It’s quite small at times I hardly realise it’s their until someone says something. And then I feel very self conscious, it’s really annoying when people stare and comment on it, sometimes I think why can’t they mind their own business.
At the end of the day i’m still human, and it’s just a spot. I thank you all for sharing your story with me, because I thought I was the only one with a birthmark on my face. Just a few words of encouragement this is for anyone, don’t hide away and feel that you are ugly or unattractive because your not. If people can’t execept you for what you are then that is their problem. Every day I go out with my head held high and a smile on my face. Because sticks and stones my break my bones but words will never harm me.
UK ~ INFORMATION ABOUT BIRTH MARK LASER REMOVAL
I’m so sorry to hear all of what you guys are going through, and thought I’d recommend my laser surgeon and tell you about my laser experience, however, I’d like to stress that this is all MY experience ~ your birthmark may be different to treat, use different lasers or cost more.
First of all, the guy I’d recommend is here:
http://www.neilpjwalker.co.uk
He is credited with having brought lasers to this country, and I have seen him at the Lister Hospital in London (although you can see him other places ~ check his website).
I have a small (about 1 cm diameter) coffee birth mark on my face. In the mid-late 90s, I started having treatment from Dr Walker. One thing I’d like to emphasize is that all birthmarks can react differently… some can be erased in one treatment, but in my case, I had about 5 treatments (at 6 monthly intervals) which gradually lightened it considerably. I had to stop treatment due to lack of money, but I am rebooked to have treatment again in a few months. I know some may complain if it doesn’t disappear in one or two treatments, but personally, all the time I see a slight improvement each time, I’m happy to continue… even if I have to keep going back for treatments for years!
COST: A half hour of Dr Walker’s time is currently £270 (read on for how much time you may need), + there is the cost of the use of the laser, which is about another £200. He will need to see you for a consultation first (£270, half hour), but in my case, he gave me treatment during the same appointment (because mine is small and quick to treat).
WHAT’S IT LIKE?: The surgeon holds the laser like a pen against your skin, and ‘zaps’ it ~ this feels like a very harsh elastic band ‘thwack’! He works over your skin a little as if he was colouring it in. My birthmark takes about thirty ‘thwacks’ to cover it, at a rate of about 2 thwacks a second… for me, it’s all over in less than a minute. However, for me, it IS painful! I’m not given any anaesthetic (for a larger area, I think you would be given something), and the first few thwacks give a numbing, ‘shocked’ sensation. As the blood flows back to the area, I start to feel the pain, and by the end of the thirty thwacks, I’m praying he’ll stop!
Mine, at 1cm diameter, is covered in less than a minute, so I’d say a 2cm birth mark would be done within 2 minutes, and so on.
The area continues to throb and be quite sore and uncomfortable for a few hours. It is ‘crusty’, with maybe a spot of blood (only a pinprick) or two. It looks similar to a cold sore. This thin scab dries up and gradually falls off by a week later, leaving me with a slightly lighter birth mark.
I can’t think of any more to tell you, but PLEASE ask any questions you’d like to know! I know how such a ridiculously trivial mark can ruin your childhood (as it did mine), and your confidence, and if I could just help one of you get treatment, I’d be happy!
I wish the poster at the beggining of this thread had told us more ~ As I understand, Dr Walker is a pioneer with lasers, and he has kept us well up to date with anything that America has!
Lastly, I should stress that I am in no way affiliated with Dr Walker, or any lasers or anything! I’m just cursed with a birthmark, but happy to have treatment from someone I trust and I would like to help others!
hey thank u! u are my sign..
but i dont know if i can reach ur doctor! coz i live really far in lebanon plzz i need a favor from u: do u know if i can find that laser treatment here in lebanon
i repeat thank u
Hi Al!
I’m afraid I don’t know about Lebanon, but if you email Dr Walker at his website and ask him to reccommend a laser doctor in Lebanon, I’m sure he will. I have had other surgical treatments from doctors reccommended by Dr Walker, and he has always sent me to the very best doctors/surgeons.
Good luck, and please let us know how you get on!
well ok then! i need a favor from u….can u contact him and tell him about my problem.
If he can provide u with names, i will be really glad.
i have birthmark on my half face…its light to medium brown…
ps. do u think it would be removed?
thank u sooo much
God bless u
hey Jane!
look i tried to send an email to the Doc. but it couldnt be received!
I really dont know why…I took the email from that website.
Hi im 12 years old and I have a dark brown birthmark on my right leg and its maybe a little in the middle of my leg…I never wear skirts, dressed, shorts any of those types of clothes that would show it. I wear pants all the time and my confidence has lowered soo much! im very pale on my legs now cuz of it and people ask me, why do you wear jeans all the time and all I say is Cuz i’m pale there and gonna tan when its hot and I really want laser removal soon so it can go away and I can wear skirts and everything!!! I never wear a bathing suit either im so ashamed of it I cant even play sports!!! I love sports and I wanna play them but it requires shorts..and i dont want them to know I have a birthmark. They say to me “Why arent you doing any sports?” and I say “Im busy after school” and they say “busy with what?” and all i say is “stuff…” and they wonder…last week I had a school picnic and I went with shorts on but covered my birthmark with a bandage and when we were almost there I really wanted to change (i brang pants in case) so i changed into pants and my friend said to me “you always wear pants…is there something your hiding on your legs or something” and I have to lie and i hate lying so I did lie and told her “I only had shorts and I didnt think we could wear shorts” (cuz we can only wear shorts to our knee or past) Im so ashamed and wonder if I’m ever going to get it removed and Im afraid the treaments are going to hurt so I want them to put me to sleep but i afraid of that to cuz what happens if i dont wake up!?!?!! WHAT SHOULD I DO???
Al: Just to let you know, I have emailed Dr Walker and I await his response ~ I’ll let you know as soon as I hear from him!
xx
Al:
Here is a copy of the email I’ve received back from Dr Walker:
‘Many thanks for your email. We suggest you start with Dr Paula Karam, P O Box 166-378 Achrafien, Beirut 11002. Tel: 00 961 120 0916 (www.healthcare.com)
This is someone whom Dr Walker knows and may be able to help personally or direct you.’
I hope that this will help you!
Regarding emailing Dr Walker via his website, I had that problem too, and I emailed him via an appointments address I had. I think the problem will be temporary, and his email address will work again soon.
Savannah:
You will NOT be given a general anesthetic (be ‘put to sleep’) for birth mark laser removal… so no worries about not waking up!
However, they may give you a local anesthetic, or just use a numbing cream.
Only you can decide what you should do, but it sounds like this is ruining your life. It is probably something that can be dealt with very quickly and easily (and most likely, with very little pain).
How do your parents feel about your problem? Would they be willing to pay for treatment? If you can afford it, I suggest you go for a consultation with a professional laser surgeon, as only they can tell you what it will take to remove it.
Good luck, and please let us know what you decide!
Thx Jane…i owe u one! look im gonna try to reach her hoping to find a solution to my face problem.
ill tell u what happens to me thx hun again
I have 2yr old daughter she has birthmark on the right side of her face starting from underneath her eye covering her cheek to her upper lip. At the moment she dosent know. It scarred me when she will start school I have heard some childern saying her face is dirty. couple have tried wipe her face with tissue or wipes at playgroups. I have been to children hospital not much help.
i have a question for u Jane and ill appreciate ur honesty… The birthmark that i have it on my half face which is pigmented light brown…can it be removed??
Al: Sorry for the delay in my reply (been away!).
My truthful answer is that I am NOT an expert, so can not give you an expert opinion. Also, it seems that some people’s birthmarks react differently than others, so even an expert may not be able to tell you for sure. HOWEVER, mine is also a light brown facial birthmark, and although it is not yet ‘removed’, it is lighter after each treatment.
I went for a treatment with Dr Walker today, and he was interested to know how you got on with Paula Karam, so please let me know!
I am 90% sure that your birthmark can be removed or at least greatly improved.
hope so!
hii… my name is Meghna. I have a birthmark on my right hand from shoulder to elbow. Its look like my hand has burnt.I want to remove it.Kindly help me.
among all of the comments i have read..This the best..I so envy you right now that u think that way.. im 25y/o and i have a port wine stain birthmark covering the left side of my face going down to half of my neck…everyday i wear turtle neck shirts and wear my hair down to cover my left cheeks..it’s always holding me back..i cant go or i dont like to go to warm places coz i refuse to wear simple shirts coz it cant cover my birthmark…i hate people staring at me and talk about me because of my birthmark..yes my friends tell me im beautiful..my boyfriends say’s he doesnt mind me having a birthmark…but deep inside i dont know if he can be proud to introduce me to he’s friends and family…that’s why i broke up with him..coz i think he deserve someone better…oh well..i just want to be normal….
I am surprised to read how similar my experience in life has been to so many who have posted on this site. I am 25 and have a red port whine stain on the right side of my face. I am a soldier in the U.S. Army and am blessed that the dermatologist on base is experienced in birthmark removal and has agreed to work with me. I completed my first laser treatment on Dec. 2 and am still recovering. The process is incredibly painful and my face went from being red to a deep black. I plan on taking pictures documenting this process and my recovery.
well its good to know that everyone is recovering but i dont think i have any chance
get a tattoo the color of your skin
I am 19, and i have TWO BIRTHMARKS…..one on my right chin touching a bit on my lip that is the size od a reeses peanuter butter cup( sorry lol the only thing i could refernece of the same size lol) and one on my right side of my neck that is a bit long, And they are both a dark brown…..I feel so self concious about it…but not as much as I did when i was a kid…..now everyday when i go out I have to wear make up and I always have my hair loose to cover the one on my neck…..I just wish ..just wish :'( that i could just not have it…that i could feel comfortable with my hair tied up and my face clean without makeup….People in my university they don’t even know I have them…and In my yr 2 i’m thinking to switch campuses and go to the other campus and not wear makeup and have a kind of start over….I really want someone to love me and I feel like my birthmarks limit me in so many ways….if anyone can help me link me to a clinic in Miami, USA that is professional and safe and can remove birthmarks…May God Bless you richly 🙂

Hey guys, I’m 34 and have a large purple birthmark over my right eye and temple. It’s just different coloured skin. It makes me unique and I like it. Yeah you get people asking if it’s a bruise but it’s a great way of talking to people when you might otherwise be ignored. Would that be better? I don’t think so. It’s also a great way of spotting superficial people. If someone is going to think less of me because if the colour of my skin then I already think less of them and am happy for them to not talk to me. My friends and loved one’s don’t even notice my birthmark, they just see me. And kids… You may well get teased about your birthmark but if you didn’t have one, it would be your hair or your shoes or your clothes etc. Coming to terms with the fact that it doesn’t matter will make you a better person in the long run so chin up and be proud of who you are. You were born this way and that needs no apologies.
Do laser surgery hurt because i am geting my birthmark off on july 7 and i am so scared….plz respond bacc soon because i really need yuhr opinion on how it feel
hiya,i’m 14 and i have a birthmark on my face above the right of my lip, im not sure where to go to get it removed and i would like to get it removed as soon as possible, im beggining to get deppressed about it and it affecting my life. im so unconfident and dont feel comfortable around new people, please email me soon and help. xxx
hey my name is jennifer and i have the problem ever since i was little i have hated my birth mark on my neck and i never wear my hair up as people will see it and say ohh you have a hicky.
Hey everyone, I’m 17 years old and I have kind of a series of pinkish red birthmarks that stretch from the top of my right knee up to my hip. It is in three major sections. When I get overheated it turns bright red. When I tan in the summer it just gets darker. It is absolutely embarrassing. I hate to wear shorts because people always as if I got burned or what happened to me. I would love to get it removed but idk how to tell my mother. This ugly birthmark has given me self esteem issues throughout my life. I just want to look normal. After reading all of everyone’s comments, it makes me feel better knowing that there are others out there that feel the same as me.
heey everyone, im 14 nearly 15 and i have quite a large brown birthmark on my shin i think its a mole and i hate it, ive shown a couple of my friends it but they say there is nothing wrong with it and i shouldnt be so self concious about it but i dont wear shorts or skirts with out knee high socks or tights that will cover it, ive tried makeup to cover it but it doesnt cover it completely, do i have any other options? thanks
Heyy guys i dont think that we can remove our birthmarks…we just have to live with it…as im doing right now, no doubt its hard but if i cant do anything about i have to adapt with it right???
i’m 16 and have a large port-wine stain on my right arm. It covers my right arm, and whilst its never been something thats bothered me before, its starting to bother me as I get older. I was just wondering after the removal of the birthmark and after its healed and so on, would there be any permanent scarring?
Hey,
i completely understand what all of you are going though, i have a brown pigmented birthmark on my stomach about 3cm by 1cm and a light bigger birthmark on my shoulder, it really knocks my confidence and makes me feel insecure especially when i go swimming, which i have stopped now because of it. I have been to the hospital and they will not take them off on the nhs and said that it would cost alot of money to get them taken off. they did however offer me camoflage which is completely free 🙂 if you ask your doctor about it they will book you an appointment. it was great, they tryed all different colours to cover it up and ordered me a prescription i had to pick up within the next few days so you could do it at home. i really recommend this, i would rather have it off obviously but this is better than nothing, i hope ive helped 🙂 stay strong
It’s ok I have a red splotch on my butt down my leg and everyone males fun of me and always ask what that is. People used to think my parents beat me too and that’s why I have it 😐
I have what is known as a ‘stork bite’. It is right in the middle of my forehead. It starts at the top of my nose and finishes at the top of my scalp. It is also about 1 & a half inches wide. It annoys me so much. It’s flat and quiet pink. The shape of it is like a rabbit head, the bottom half round and then the top half parted like the two ears. I am only 11 so am still at the stage where kids are judgmentle or can bully anyones who different. HELP!!! I’ve lost so much self esteam and am really self consious, especially around people I don’t know yet.
Hi Everyone! ~ It’s me, Jane again!
I was so sad that I lost the link to this page when my laptop broke down, but I’m so happy to have found it again!
First of all, I thought I’d update you on my own birthmark treatment. If you’ve read my last posts, you’ll know I had some treatments ten years ago which faded my ‘cafe-au-lait’ birthmark considerably… but it was still slightly noticeable. Since my last messages, I’ve had two treatments with Dr Walker and it has now ALMOST GONE!!! ~ It now looks more like a light shadow… but VERY faint. Only a year ago, I was aware of people glancing at it when thay were talking to me, but now they never do! I’m really delighted! I will try another treatment in a few months time, but if it doesn’t fade any more, I’m perfectly happy with it (I never imagined I’d be happy until it was 100% gone).
I just wanted to let you all know that you don’t have to put up with your birthmarks if you don’t like them. I’m not a professional, so I can’t guarantee treatments will work for you, but you MUST look into it if you’re bothered by your birthmark. If you’re in England, I strongly reccommend Dr Walker (search this page for his name to find my previous posts with his details), or if you’re elsewhere in the world, Google ‘birthmark laser treatment + your area’.
Al: I’m sorry I’ve not been here to reply to your last couple of messages. Just because the surgeon you saw said ‘it may come back’ does not mean it will. Ten years ago Dr Walker told me mine may darken again (especially if I don’t use sunblock), but in ten years it never did. Personally, I’m happy to go back for treatment every few years if that’s what it takes ~ it’s not such a big deal (no anaesthetic, less than one minute treatment, reasonable cost). I’m very cross with you for telling everyone that you “dont think that we can remove our birthmarks… we just have to live with it”. I did you a favour requesting details of a surgeon in Lebanon from Dr Walker, but you declined treatment from her. That’s fine, but you have no right to then tell people they have to live with it. Treatment HAS WORKED BRILLIANTLY FOR ME, and can work brilliantly for many people on this board (if not all).
I will once again try to check back regularly and am happy to answer any questions. I noticed one poster above was worried about scarring; Providing it’s done professionally, laser treatment leaves NO scarring, however, old-fashioned cosmetic removal surgery does leave scarring. However, (as far as I know) laser should be able to fade most (if not all) birthmarks, and should be your first option.
I’m very passionate about this. My tiny birthmark ruined my childhood, and I’m so happy to not see it now when I look in the mirror. Treatment is available, easy and effective… and doesn’t cost the Earth. I really hope that all of you who are unhappy pursue treatment, and if I can give you any advice, I’d be delighted!
Jane x
Ooh… one other thing!
Having just read through some of the posts again, I thought I would just clarify something;
We keep mentioning ‘birthmark REMOVAL’. When I was a child, the only treatment available was REMOVAL by a plastic surgeon ~ this would involve cutting and scarring. When we talk about modern lasers, using the word ‘removal’ is a bit misleading ~ laser treatment FADES birthmarks. I’m not sure of the exact scientific process, but lasers work under the skin to prevent pigment (colour) being created in the skin (or something like that, lol!). In my case, my birthmark has become a little lighter after every treatment (about 7 or so treatments), and is now VERY faint ~ I hope one more treatment may finally fade it to my natural skin colour. Laser is not ‘instant removal’, but leaves no scars.
Britiney: Did you have your treatment in July? How did it go?
hey. Even i exactly have the same problem..
I want to ask about a birthmark in back of the legg called coconut, it is very dark and has some hair , how can we remove it please, the bast way
I am 19 years old and I have a pretty dark birthmark right in the centre of my right cheek which is a little bit smaller than the size of a pea. I’ve been pretty self-conscious about this throughout high school as well as growing up as a child however it did not stop me from thinking negativly towards my future. I am afraid to talk to my parents about it but I live in Toronto, Canada and I feel that someone down here in Toronto is skilled enough to remove this off of my face. Any comments would be appericiated.
I have 2 cafe-au-lait spots on my left and right cheek and it has held me back from doing so much and it lowers my self esteem and makes me feel so self conscious and i play a lot of sports so i wear my hair up a lot and i feel like everyone is starring at me i feel like there isnt a person i have met that has said you have dirt on your face or you have paint on your face and i would become so embarrassed and i would have to say not that is a birthmark
hi everyone i also have a birthmark what they call a port wine stain on my left cheek i have had it for many a year and it does hold you back many years ago i had laser treatment which did reduce in colour and size a little, on enquiring there are now new techniques in lasers which i am going to give a try.
hello everyone its al again… jane i didnt mean anything..but that day i was really down coz the doctor was only talking about money and she didnt give me any hope…i have a hope that one day someone will be able to find a solution to remove our birthmarks for good. if anyone knows anything about surgical removal please tell me coz im up to any surger.
i dont wanna put foundations anymore and no more lies on my bf …i want to be me thank u
Al, the solution is already there – Lasers WORK. My birthmark is all but gone, there is only the faintist shadow left that only I can see. You can have your birthmark removed/faded, but not for free. If you’re not prepared to pay money, don’t bother looking into it. The Dr you saw probably only talked about money because there’s not much else to discuss – birthmark removal is pretty routine nowadays.
Hi I have a very large birthmark going from the top half of my back to my neck it realy gives me low self confidence and I can’t do the things I would love to because of it can anyone help
I have a birthmark on my right arm shape of an oval i feel it stands right out and im really self-conscious about it. i dont wear short sleaves and always have a jumper on to cover it because im really embarrassed by it. im really considering surgery but how much does it cost? and how do i go and see about getting it removed?

Thank you ,
Jane
I have the same problem! I have a birthmark on my left leg and it’s dark brown. It’s just a little bigger than a pencil eraser and I want to get rid of it!! I’m 12 years old and nobody but my family knows. I don’t want to tell anyone because I know they’ll all make fun of me and they will probably start bullying me about it. I always avoid wearing shorts and stuff like that so it never shows. I’ve always worn pants. I told my parents I want it removed but they told me it was silly and it didn’t matter. But I think it does and I want it gone! I want it gone so please, if anyone has any tips, please reply!! 🙁
