Efudix, a cream which is used to treat the early signs of skin cancer, is claimed to also be able to erase wrinkles in the skin and help patients look younger.
Ever since Efudix has been used there has been anecdotal evidence about it’s anti-ageing properties. Researchers from the University of Michigan decided to study Efudix in an attempt to discover whether the cream did actually hold anti-wrinkle properties or not.
The team looked at a group of twenty-one 56-85 year olds who were all being treated for actinic keratoses (a precancer usually found on the face, neck and forearms). Each of the patients in the group used Efudix twice daily for six months. Once the six months was up, the researchers compared their skin with their skin before the treatment.
The results have been published in the Archives of Dermatology and shows that te researchers found that the patients had softer skin with improved texture and fewer wrinkles, as well as no precancerous cells. The skin was also said to be more toned, less yellow with discolorations such as brown spots reduced.
Efudix cream costs around £18 for a 20g tube. However it will cause the skin to be quite raw and red. In some patients, the cream will causes high levels of irritancy, so much so that some people may not wish to use the cream.
Efudix cream works by peeling away the surface of the skin, a similar sort of technique to laser skin resurfacing. Any wrinkles which are caused by sun damage should be lessened once the cream has been applied, however the cream will have little effect on deep-set wrinkles not caused by the sun.

The potential of fluorouracil cream (fluorouracilcream.com) is extraordinary. Given the size of the anti-aging, wrinkle-removal product sales, in the U.S. and worldwide (over $12 billion in 2005 according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery), this substance could become a blockbuster.
HI there, I’m currently 15 days into a 21 day treatment with Efudix for solar keratosis. I’m interested in your trial where participants used the cream for 6 months. After 2 weeks I’m in a fair bit of discomfort (dryness, soreness, burning) and looking frightful, and really looking forward to finishing treatment in a week’s time.
Did the people in the trial suffer side effects for the whole 6 months, or did it settle down? If so how long before it settled down?
Also, can you recommend a cream to promote healing once the treatment is finished?
Thanks, Kaye
hi kaye im also using efidix and i dont believe anyone could use efudix twice daily for six months. the pain is bad enough going a couple of weeks as we both know.about the wrinkle thing im a 46 year old male and i cant even frown now because i have lost all my wrinkles so that bit is true. but a word of advice to anyone contemplating using this cream for cosmedic purposes make sure you build up your resistance to pain because it is a very painful experience to put yourself through. regards john rogers
I’d like to meet these people who did efudix twice a day for six months. I have recently done one month for precancer. I simply do not believe that anyone, no matter how vain, could endure this cosmetically. In short, bullshit.
